The Roman Coliseum or Flavian Amphitheater, was built over the remains of Nero's "Golden House" in Rome around 80 AD. The primary function of an amphitheater was to house spectacles of blood sports - gladiator combats and hunts of wild animals in addition to the persecution of Roman Christians.
