The Colossus at Rhodes was a huge 105 foot bronze statue of Helios (Apollo) erected at the harbor of Rhodes, a Greek island off the coast of Asia Minor. The masterpiece of the sculptor Chares, who worked over 12 years to complete the project. It stood for only 56 years, destroyed during an earthquake in 224 BC.
