The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age and the owners are very patient. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. Usually unfriendly with strangers. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children.

Basset Hound

Click Picture For Larger View

A loveable friendly dog that is excellent with children and strangers. This dog would make a great family pet except that it has numerous medical issues due to its breeding. While they love food and may be less energetic than some breeds, they will exercise regularly if given the chance. Most Bassets enjoy activities that use their natural endurance, like long walks or hikes. Like other hounds, they are often difficult to train many Bassets will obey commands when offered a food reward, but will "forget" the training when a reward is not present. They are notoriously difficult to housebreak. Training and housebreaking are not impossible, however, and can be accomplished with consistency and patience on the part of the owner.

Average Height: 14 Inches

Average Weight: 60 Pounds
Health Issues: Difficulties with legs due to size to weight ratio. Must not be overfed as extra weight will cause leg strain.
Training: Very stubborn dog, therefore difficult to train.
Living Conditions: The dog is very inactive indoors. Requires much outdoor exercise to maintain healthy weight.
Life Expectancy: 10 - 12 Years

Aggression - Average Children - Excellent Temperament - Good

Quote From Your Pure Bred Puppy Website:

Basset Hounds cannot be trusted off-leash. They will take off -- oblivious to your frantic shouts -- after anything that emits an odor or runs.

Beagles should never be left outside in your yard, unsupervised. The mournful baying and howling will have your neighbors calling the cops to report the nuisance -- or quietly letting your Beagle out of his yard so he'll wander away.

Quote From Your Pure Bred Puppy Website:

If you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, I do not recommend Bearded Collie puppies. Young Bearded Collies (up to about two years old) romp and jump with great vigor, and things can go flying, including people. The temptation to play roughly and nip at moving people is simply too strong in many young Beardies.

Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by baying and destructive chewing. This dog was bred to herd and that is what it wants to do constantly. Will chase or herd everything and is a constant bundle of energy. Not the best dog around children or strangers.
