Basenji |

The Basenji is
alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and
makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age and
the owners are very patient. It is very intelligent, but does not respond
well to training due to its being extremely independent. It is also very
mischievous and can cause damage if left alone for long hours. It should not
be trusted with non-canine pets. Usually unfriendly with strangers. They are
usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. |

Basset Hound |

|
A loveable
friendly dog that is excellent with children and strangers. This dog would
make a great family pet except that it has numerous medical issues due to
its breeding. While they
love food and may be less energetic than some breeds, they will exercise
regularly if given the chance. Most Bassets enjoy activities that use their
natural endurance, like long walks or hikes. Like other hounds, they are
often difficult to train many Bassets will obey commands when offered a food
reward, but will "forget" the training when a reward is not present. They
are notoriously difficult to housebreak. Training and housebreaking are not
impossible, however, and can be accomplished with consistency and patience
on the part of the owner. |

neighbors calling the cops to report the nuisance -- or quietly letting your
Beagle out of his yard so he'll wander away. |

If you have small children, or if you or
anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, I do not recommend Bearded
Collie puppies. Young Bearded Collies (up to about two years old) romp and
jump with great vigor, and things can go flying, including people. The
temptation to play roughly and nip at moving people is simply too strong in
many young Beardies. |

The Bedlington Terrier is strong, lithe, graceful, and built
for speed. He is
very energetic and loves to play, but is known for his mild and gentle side.
His personality earns him the reputation of a great companion dog.
This dog is an
active, charming breed that will share a strong bond with their masters.
They love to be the center of attention and be around their family as much
as possible. Although they have an outgoing loving attitude with people,
they are vicious fighters that will not hesitate to kill at a moments
notice. They have a high prey drive for small animals and rodents so if
these were to catch their eye, the animal would have no chance. |

The Belgian Tervuren is a very smart

protective of its family and makes a great guard dog. They also make
excellent alert police dogs, which they are often used for. The Tervuren,
serious and watchful, may be shy with some strangers. Because of its herding
instinct, this dog may try to herd some of the family members by nipping
their heels. This breed is good with children and will be affectionate and
friendly with those it loves. Courageous and dominant, it might not get

Coonhounds MUST have regular
opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they
will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by baying
and destructive chewing. Bored Coonhounds are famous for chewing through
drywall, ripping the stuffing out of sofas, and turning your yard into a
moonscape of giant craters. |

To be fair to your Bloodhound,
make sure children do not pester or hurt the dog, because Bloodhounds will
