King of France in name from 1795 and in fact from 1814, born in Versailles, NC France, the younger brother of Louis XVI. He fled from Paris in June 1791, finally taking refuge in England, becoming the focal point for the Royalist cause. On Napoleon's downfall (1814) he re-entered Paris, and promised a Constitutional Charter. His restoration was interrupted by Napoleon's return from Elba, but after Waterloo (1815) he again regained his throne. His reign was marked by the introduction of parliamentary government with a limited franchise. |
