Emperor of Mexico (1864–1867), born 1832 in Vienna, Austria, the younger brother of Emperor Francis Joseph, and an archduke of Austria. In 1863, he accepted the offer of the crown of Mexico, supported by France; When Napoleon III withdrew his troops, he refused to abdicate, and in 1867 made a brave defence at Querétaro, but was betrayed and executed. |
