The Gothic cathedral church of Paris, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, on the Île de la Cité (an island in the Seine), begun in 1163 and effectively finished by 1250. It is especially noted for its innovatory flying buttresses, sculptured façade, and great rose windows with 13th-century stained glass.
