A statue of a woman 46 m (152 ft) high holding a torch in her raised right hand, on Liberty Island in New York harbor. Designed by the French architect Bartholdi, it was given to the Americans by the French in 1884 to commemorate the French and American Revolutions. Unveiled and dedicated in 1886, it has been a US national monument since 1924. It underwent complete renovation in the 1980s. |
